To sum it up, it is a marketing issue. The Angels are the jr. team in the Los Angeles television market. By being named Anaheim, which Disney was forced to change from California Angels by the city when they bought the team from the Autry's, the team could not get the sweet TV deals that the Dodgers were getting, even though both teams play in the same TV market.
Also for those that are up on their Angel history, LA Angels were the original name of the team when they were inducted into the American League.
A prime example of a team that uses a metropolitan city name instead of its suburb would be the old LA Rams who shared a stadium with the California Angels in Anaheim back in the 80's. Currently, a case can be made for many teams such as Dallas Cowboys, who play at Irving TX instead of actually playing in Dallas.

The new owner wanted to change the name because he thought it would be better for marketing. The city of Anaheim and all the Angel fans didn't want to be known from L.A. Anaheim is a city in Orange County and we are not part of Los Angeles. But the fight was lost and the name was changed- they will always be the Anaheim Angels to me

The most sensible controversy is because the Angels are NOT in Los Angeles, or even Los Angeles County. The big jerk just didn't think people we smart enough to know where Anaheim is. Of course this thinking is wrong. I go to Angel games all the time and we Angel fans know exactly where they are located and it ain't Los Angeles,
