Ear Clear - Ear Cleaning Pads by 8in1
EAr Clear - Ear Clensing Liquid by 8in1 - on a cotton ball
Earoxide by Tomlyn - on a cotton ball
IF you use a Q-tip be VERY CAREFUL as you can hurt the ear if you put the Q-tip too far down into the ear. The reason they recommend a cotton ball, or the ear pads which you wrap around the tip of your finger to use is that you can injure the dog's ear if you poke a Q-tip too far into the ear!

Purchase a dog ear cleaning solution from your vet. Squirt the solution into your dog's ear canal and squish it around for several seconds; this will help break up the debris. Take a gauze strip or cotton ball and gently wipe out the outside & inside of the ear. You can put a piece of gauze on your finger to get down inside the ear, but unless you are taught how to use a Q-Tip by your vet's staff, I don't suggest doing it at home (you can injure the eardrum).
If your dog has lots of debris or its ear smells funny, have the vet look at it to see if there is a bacterial or yeast infection.

NEVER use a Q-tip! Go to a vet or a Petsmart and get a product that is a "drying ear cleanser" something like Oticlens,Oticalm etc.,NEVER use alcohol, water or peroxide in a dogs ear. Water & peroxide WILL lead to a yeast infection and alcohol is too harsh for the delicate skin inside. After you use the cleanser, wipe out the ear with a cotton ball.

With an ear wash like OtiCleanse. Just squirt it in, squish it around, and let him shake his head to clear it out. Wipe inside of ear flap with cotton ball or soft cloth.

I have always used a Q-Tip and dilluted alcohol. It helps get that black gunky stuff out of there. It does not harm the dogs, and it also prevents ear infections if some gets in their ear so not to worry about that.

Ewwwww! This is gross. But, a Q-Tip as mention will work. What I do, get the dog laying on your lap and feeling loved. You slowly and very carefully use a Q-Tip.
But, if the dog is scratching it's ears then this is ear mites. We use cooking oil. Ask here what people use for ear mites.

they make cleaning solutions...
and also after you clean the ears with a q-tip then you can take cooking oil and a few tissues and rub it in their ears...
keeps them moisturized and clean
