It was from 1959-1975. although it is commonly known as a war, it is still an unofficial one and known as the Vietnam conflict and is still officially a " police action". This designation exists because Congress never formally declared war on North Vietnam. The US had had large contingencies of soldiers in what was known as South Vietnam from as early as 1954.
It became a mostly if not solely American " war" from 1964 onwards until April 30,1975 when the last of the American troops left the country.

Advisers were in country in late 60 and early 61. The Vietnamization, or introduction of large troop numbers started in early 65. In late 73, US began to pull troops out, but still maintained a strong presence, until the fall of of 74.

Saigon fell in early 75 so, for all purposes, the war was 10 years, and a little over 54,000 troops died. The slaughter that took place after the fall of Saigon, the numbers will never fully be known.

Hard question for which you need to define its parameters. Do you mean U.S. involvement in Vietnam? Even that is difficult because some U.S. advisors were in Vietnam in the 1950s. Do you mean offical U.S. combat troops?

Vietnam fought a war of independence from the French prior to WW II, suspended it fight to oppose the occupation by Japan, and resumed the war with Franch after WW II.

Which war do you mean?
