The max setting is used for cooling the car down faster. It recirculates the air inside without adding the outside air. It uses no more gas than regular AC. The only difference is that a trap door opens and uses the inside air over and over.
If there is a bad smell in the air while you are driving, like a dead skunk, then you can put the AC on max and help prevent the bad air from coming in the car. good luck.

MAX A/C typically means two things.
Number one: your fan speed is at its highest or blowing the hardest.
Number two: It is recirculating the air inside the car and not drawing in any outside air.
This cools the interior faster when the car has been parked out in the sun for a long time and it's like 130 degrees when you climb inside.
Normal cooling allows you to set the fan speed and it draws in some outside air so you don't pass out from CO (Carbon Monoxide) or CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) that can build up inside the passenger space.

Max A/C is the same as recirculate. There's a door that closes off the outside air supply and the A/C then just keeps cooling the air already in the cabin. Because of this the blower seems to blow harder or faster.
It has nearly no additional effect on the engine.

you have gotten somewhat some in part the terrific option solutions. The max A/C placing does 2 issues: a million. the ballast resistor to the fan motor is bypassed to improve the fan velocity and... 2. The air intake from the exterior is closed, recycling the interior air. just about all autos marked "max A/C" artwork this sort. some autos have in basic terms a recylce place that doesn't influence fan velocity, yet they don't seem to be labled "max A/C".

Just a comment, AC does use more gas when on. At idle my car will immediately increase RPM when AC is turned on. It may be less noticeable in a V8 than my 4 cyl, but it does add drag on the engine. Usually about 4hp

max a/c just blows a little harder! uses no extra gas! Most people don't know this, but a/c uses no extra gas! Don't believe me, have a/c off, look at RPM's on tachometer, then turn a/c on and see how much harder your engine has to work! Not one bit of difference! If caught in stop and go traffic, better not to use a/c as car will over heat if stopped for too long with a/c on!
