I would stick with the Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla...they don't break down nearly as often as the other mentioned and they hold their resale value. Depending on the year of the car I would also consider both the Passat and Jetta, however, these 2 vehicles maintenance costs are much more than the Honda or Toyota.

for me the best choices are the civic and the Mazda 3.
You can't possibly go wrong with these two.

The passat is nice, but you are not in the same price class. If you want inexpensive. Civic or mazda 3

With the Jetta, there is always reliability issue.

If you buy a lancer, buy the new one. The 2007- ones have a terrible interior design, the base engine in really not worth it, braking is quite ordinary, the auto trans is lazy and for me, the exterior design is incredibly boring.

The Honda civic is incredibly reliable, very good fuel economy, the engines are great, security in honda product is very good. Pretty much a perfect small car.

The mazda 3, I bought one for my ex girlfriend and I chose it because it's one of the easiest cars to drive. It handles very well, i loved the engine, the fit and finish is irreprochable. It I think it's one of the best looking small car in and out.

Go civic or Mazda 3 and you'll be happy.
