Communications Major.
Look into internships to see if you would really like to do this type of work.

Uh, marketing or public relations? Seriously. Where I went to college, marketing was in the business school and PR was in the journalism school. But they're not always in the same places and these majors are not the only ways to get those jobs. You will also need to know the field in which you plan to do your marketing or PR - so you might make your major there and take the marketing and PR classes as electives. Good luck.

Hi,
As someone who has hired marketing/PR professionals for over 20 years, I'm happy to answer this question.
Go to a good liberal arts school. Major in one of the following: marketing, advertising, public relations, journalism, psychology or business.
Then, take plenty of classes in the others, so you get a well rounded view of the business. In our business, you never know what you're going to need to know.
Also, go download this FREE e-book:

It was written by people in the business, offering their best advice to students/grads who are looking for their first job. You will be amazed at how much you'll learn!
My best advice -- internships. Do as many as you can and be as invaluable as you can be. That will give you a huge leg up.
Best of luck,
Drew

I majored in communications and it is a joke.Any idiot can learn that stuff on the side. Get a degree in something real that you find interesting, like finance, history, sociology, math or science. Get practical experience at the same time with marketing & PR classes, workshops and being on the staff of the campus newspaper, radio & TV stations. Your CV will be a lot stronger than the vapid, bobbleheaded playboy bunnies that have a communications or marketing degree.

I was an English major and worked as a marketing and PR exec for years. It's really important that you know how to write and communicate well for both fields. Make sure that you join PRSSA when you're in school, too. Hope that helps!
