The F-15 and the F-14 are both aircraft that belong to the same nation. Why the heck would they be fighting each other. If some sort of airforce/navy who is more superior conflict started....then the F-15 would be the one that is most likely to win. Unless the navy used their cruise missiles to take out the airfields.

Not a fair fight. Strike Eagle is a fighter / striker hybrid. F-14 is a fleet interceptor.

What'll happen is basically like this:

Strike Eagle will try to use terrain masking to get as close to the F-14 as possible. With that radar it can go nape-of-the-earth.

F-14, on the other hand, will stay as high as possible, and as far away, preferably over an ocean, where it's flat and has no place to hide, so it can use its Phoenix and then AMRAAMs, and only then close in with Sidewinders and guns.

F-15 would need to get close into AMRAAM range, as it needs to survive the gap between Phoenix and AMRAAM. Closer it gets, the better.

Once both sides have exhausted the long and medium range missiles, it's a match between the two pilots. And in this case, both are evenly matched, as BOTH aircrafts have a backseater!

F-14 technically has a better turn radius at lower speeds due to those sweep wings. However, again, it's up to the driver, not the plane.

EDIT: Actually Phoenix is designed to shoot down bombers, so it's debatable if it's that good against fighters. Against modern fighters with EW equipment, I'd say kill rate would be no more than 50%

I agree mostly with Kasey C, but I'd say that the Slammers would end the battle and it all depends on who shoots first.

Both contestants have similar radars and they would probably detect each other almost simultaneously. I doubt if the Eagle would crawl on the ground to avoid detection, because an upward shot of the AMRAAM would reduce its range while the 'Cat has more PoK with her Slammer headed down. My prediction for the F-14's maneuver, launch a couple of Phoenixes when beyond the Slammers range and close in on the Eagle on full throttle, get to the Slammer's F-Pole and shoot the Slammer. The Eagle never gets a confident shot!

The F-14D would rule, IMO.

(How about the F-14D using the IRST and going with EMCON ON?)

so its a knife fight between a ground attack version of the eagle and a tom cat?

well..if its just a straight gun engagement..id have to give it to the Tom cat. The strike eagle is just a little performance degraded due to the extra weight of the conformal fuel tanks and extra surface area. I have to admit, having an extra set of eyes in the rear position is a big help. But id still have to give a slight edge to the tomcat in a straight gunfight.

Missile to missile engagement? both would probably shoot each other down at the same time....lol.

the funny thing is...its how you drive it, and luck. the navy, flying a four group of F-4s, actually got the leg up on a four flight of F-15s back in 1984...it was kinda humiliating to say the least. and the navy had the gun camera films to show how they did it. the Indian navy kinda waxed some of the aircraft a while back too, but that was a very very good ambush.

There is nothing called 'Super Tomcat' Navy's designation for F-14 is just 'Tomcat' In dogfight F-14 wilL surely win because it is primary role is of a fighter('F') whereas Superhornet is 'F/A' Fighter/Attack Also F-14 has "swept back" wings which allow it to take sharp turns during dogfighting, a skill F-18 lacks F-14 is compartively lighter than F-18

in response to Thomas S, iran hase some f-14's we sold them back in the 70's when the shaw was over there, whether they fly or not is a different story. back to the origional question. I say the Tomcat because of the Phoenix missles. 150 miles out and shoot? most planes cant even tell they're locked on at that range, and by the time they see the missle its too late anyway. F-14 all the way.

Future of dog fight???? The First flight of the F-15 aircraft.
27 Jul 1972 .
F-15 would never get close enough to a F-14 to do anything to it! Splash goes the eagle!!

F-15 all the way. It's a different generation of fighter. F-15 has better speed, agility, armament than the F-14. Granted, F14 was a great fighter in the 70s and 80s, but F-15 is the future of dogfight.

With an estimated range on the AUG9 radar of 150 miles and a pheonix missle, the F15 would never know what hit it. In a dog fight, F15 has the upper hand.

Obviously its F-15 strike eagle and its capability to perform air-to-air or air-to-surface missions at all altitudes, day or night, in any weather.
