You can set it up on the same phone line. But people will have to call you prior to faxing you, so you know when a fax is coming through. Then generally, you wouldnt pick up the phone - the fax would and you would just hit the start button (on some models).
If you keep the same phone line, there shouldnt be any additional costs. It would be just like adding a new phone in another room.

You don't need a 2nd line unless you are expecting a high volume of inbound or outbound faxes. If you do just use a single line, you may want to see if your landline provider has a feature called Distinctive Ring. For an added cost, you can get a 2nd phone number that works on your exsisting line. Give that as your fax #, and when someone sends you a fax, your machine will automatically pick it up (check your manuf. instructions on the fax machine to be sure it is compatible).

No second phone line is needed. When you pick up the phone and hear a sound on it, instead of a person, there you press the start button on the fax machine.

To save yourself the cost of an extra phone line and ink, you should consider Internet faxing. Internet faxing allows you to send/receive faxes in your email inbox. You don't need to purchase any hardware or software; all you need to sign up is an email address. For more information go to http://www.myfax.com

just plug it into the phone line, it doesnt care what line its on
just know how to operate it, if its on your primary line which gets voice calls set it to manual receive and if you get a fax press the button to receive
if you just need it to send faxes, it'll work like any other phone if you plug it in
