Deppression if left untreated can lead to severe promblems. I personally have benefited from taking psychiatric medications. I improved a standarized IQ test by over 20 points.I think clearer and remember more now than I did years ago! If you think you are depressed please take the time to be evalueated. It could save you much misery and maybe your life. Good luck!

Okay, one or two people here are saying that anti-depressants are stupid and that it's all in your head and for you to just "get over it". Depression is a very real thing. Anti-depressants work for some, but not for others, same with therapy. It all depends on the person.
Anti-depressants do NOT affect your intellegence. They help you cope with your world better, and when you are feeling better you will probably do better with whatever you are doing including school, marks, work, etc.
Depression is itself a mental illness, but it does not neccessarily lead to other mental illnesses or problems. But sometimes other mental illnesses or problems can lead TO depression, not always the other way around. I.e. if a person has Aspbergers (lesser form of autism) they are more likely to develop depression, but it does not work the other way around. Sometimes when a person develops depression during puberty it is part of beginning i.e. Schizophrenia or Bipolar. But that is fairly rare. Depression can be by itself or occaisionally part of a Bipolar disorder.
Depression is a very seious thing and needs to get treated, kind of like if you had Diabetes. It needs to be monitored and treated like any other type of illness, physical or mental. If you are worried that you may be depressed talk to your doctor and see what you can do with them to make sure you get - and stay - better.

Depression can lead to other mental illnesses like psychosis.
Antidepressents can sometimes make thinking harder, but doesn't affect your normal intelligence.

It may, especially if you're predisposed to it. Like if mental illness runs in your family, or it can be learned if that is all you grew up around. My opinion is that antidepressents when used correctly under a dr.'s care, are mostly helpful. GOOD LUCK!

Depression, itself is a psychiatric illness. It may or may not be co-morbid with other psychiatric conditions.
Anti-depressents have no effect on intelligence.
