My dad's Cockatoo is bleeding, because he clipped one of his nails and it bled for about 45 minutes, and it quit. Well, now it's bleeding again and my dad keeps putting flour on it, but he just licks it off, what else could we put on it that is NONTOXIC, that would stop the bleeding? We can't take him to a vet bacause it's Memorial Day, and my dad said that he did it very gently but he is a easy bleeder, and a vet couldn't do a better job. P.S. Please prey for Cookie!!

I just wanted to add that you can buy this thing called quick stop. It is something that you can keep around just in-case this should happen again. I also use it on my Dog. (when I cut her nails to short) That's all I got. I'm happy things are going better.

It will eventually stop bleeding, just wait for it to dry. I know of a bird that bit its own whole nail off with its last home (now it is somewhere much better) and it survived no problem without a vet. Just DONT touch the cut anymore than you have because it will put the bird under more stress and possibly infect the wound.

If there is a drug store open you can get a styptic pen there. They are designed to stop bleeding cuts caused by shaving. It contains a chemical that helps a clot form, the same chemical found in pet store products that are designed for bleeding nails. Keeping the bird as calm as possible will reduce the blood pressure flow. If he will let you keep your finger pressed against the end of the nail that will also help. Try to remain calm yourself as well, birds get nervous when they sense tension and fear in their "flock" members.

cayanne pepper, you can get it in the spice section of any market...put it on the bleeding til it stops it will coagulate it...it might sting for a second so be ready for the bird to react...if he does lick it be ready for some screeching and some water...but it wont hurt him...you can hold the bird in a towel which might be easier for it. make sure cookie has a mineral block which should help with the bleeding issue...hope it helps

Quick-Stop is the commercial answer. Pressing the nail into a bar of soap will stop it and will not taste good.

Cookie will be okay. Hope you and Dad are too.

Tell your father to apply anything he has when he cuts himself shaving. That will work or baking soda would work better than flour. Good luck;^)
