help! woke up this morning with a pain in my neck. when im looking straight there is no pain, but when i turn it left/right/up/down at a certain angle there is pain. It originates from the left shoulder/neck area. This has happened to me before last year.. my mum says its because i did not have a good sleeping posture the night before( not sure if she is true though). It went away after about 2 days.

How can i treat the pain? I kind of need instant relieve/cure because i am having my piano diploma exam tmr, and i need to practice really hard today too (:

thanks!

your mother is right, you should sleep on your back as this causes the least stress on your spinal column. This will stop you from having neck problems.

For now apply a heating pad or hot towels to your neck for twenty minutes. Afterwards apply an analgesic cream into the area. Do this three times a day.

also take an anti inflammatory medication, such as Advil soft gel capsules, four times daily. This will help stop the pain.

As long as you don't have any stomach problems, you take take an ant inflammatory like alleve. Make sure you take it with food. It might be from the way that you slept. You said the left shoulder/neck area, so u might have stretched that side of your body when u were sleeping Try sleeping on your back and check your pillow. If its your pillow is big, it can affect your neck.

It also can be from being on the phone and holding it up with your neck for a long time.

There are many other causes but unecessary to discuss unless the neck pain persists.

Another thing that you can try is cold immediately after the injury and heat after that. That might help with the pain, but alleve is a sure bet.

Right now, you are still in the inflammatory phase, you can limit the exudate ("gunk released with inflammation") by use of cold packs 3-4 times a day...about 10 minutes at a time. After the 4th or 5th day as the inflammatory response subsides, then you can move to heat. At this stage, heat might increase the inflammatory response.

For long term management, consider getting a cervical roll which is slipped inside your pillow case using 1 pillow (go to www.optp.com) or get a contured pillow.

Carefully watch your pain pattern. Initial discomfort is not uncommon, however, if your neck pain is getting progressively worse and remains worse the following day or slowly increases in severity and becomes intolerable, you should stop and seek advice from your health care provider.

I get those sometimes. A warm towel works wonders. Get rid of the pillow, especially if your using 2. If you are having the problem on a recurring basis, you should seek medical advice. Could be something more, severe high blood pressure will do that to you as well.

That happened to me this morning to!! I was going to
type a question about it - but instead I found your question so
I am going to try these things to see if they help. I am 27
so I live with my family (husband and son's) but I did call my mom and she was off work today so she was able to come by this evening to drop something off called a neck massager. I will try it and if it doesn't work I will try some of the answers/ideas you got from your question.
