OK well call it traction It keeps the cuetip from sliding off the ball ,like sand on an icey sidewalk serious enough!!

Physics! The chalk sticks to the tip of the cue. The chalk provides friction so when the tip of the cue strikes the cue ball the tip actually sticks to the ball for a few Milli seconds. That prevents the tip from glancing off the ball.

the chalk is used to prevent miscuing.i recommend that you use chalk every after shot you make.especially when you are about to shoot th cue ball with english(or top/left/right spin), or when you are drawing the cue ball.

Simply put; without chalk on your cue, the cue can (probably will) slip and you'll blow the shot.

Its used for frcition on the ball... the chalk actually "grips" the ball in essence so the cue won't slip.
