They make a circular cutter specially for dogs that you can buy most anywhere for around $10. A dogs nails contain a very large blood vessel so be very careful when trying to clip it. It's best to have some clotting paste around when you do it. I use a flashlight to see the vessel and cut just past it. The more often you clip your dogs nails the vessel will back up and become shorter making it much easier to do.
Good luck,

I would suggest taking to the vvets as if they are that thick they are older dogs. Pup should start to get their nails done at about 2 weeks old and then they are use to it. As the dog grows without having the nails done on a regular basis teh quick (vein) will aslo grow. A vet would know where to cut and then can show you.

Get them used to your touching their feet first and foremost. Once they can handle that get a good quality clippers-not something from Walmart. Clip small amounts at first so you don't quick the nail which will make it hell to clip them again and try to clip even with the pad. If they will let you turn the foot so you can see the bottom of the nail. When you see a dark grey or black dot in the middle of the nail stop-that's the quick. Always reward with a treat or praise after they are done.

If you go to a grooming salon it is fairly cheap. If you do it yourself and they are the black nails be careful and don't cut the vein because that hurts them. Look under the nail and you will see the vein. Although with the black nails it is just easier to take them to the grooming salon.

You can buy clippers in the pet isle of wal-mart. they will clip through a boxers nails but if you are afraid of doing it your vet will do it for around $10. The clippers come with a guard on them to prevent you from clipping to far back and allowing you dog to bleed to death.

If you are not comfortable using the nail clippers (not human, obviously, they are special for dogs) then I would take your dog to the vet or groomers to have them do it. I was extremely nervous the first time my dogs nails were clipped, so the vet did it for me without any problem.

Another option to cutting is to purchase a Dremel tool (I have a battery operated one) and purchase a drum shaped grinding bit (I have also used a sanding disk). Once you get the dog accustom to the noise and you have good control over holding the dog's paws, you can grind down very quickly and avoid quiking the nerve.

Take it to the vet. If you cut it to short it will make the nails bleed.
