It really has nothing to do with the police ... it's the lawmakers that decide whether it's illegal or not. Police are required to enforce the law so don't complain when they do their duty. If you don't like the law then complain to your lawmakers. As far as actually wearing a seatbelt, many experienced police officers will tell you that they have never had to unbuckle the seat belt of a dead person. I was on the job for 28 years and that statement is true for me. Don't be stubborn, wear it.

It may well be your body but;
1) Someone else will have to pick pieces of you up off the road if you have an accident and go through the windscreen. Why should they have to suffer that trauma and upset just because you are awkward and won't wear a seat belt?
2) Why should the NHS i.e. our hard earned taxes fund treatment for additional injuries you suffer simply because you "don't want" to wear a seat belt?
3) If you are in the rear without a seat belt you will injure others in the car as you fly through the air. Why should they suffer because you are being pedantic?
4) If you are crippled as a result of preventable injuries do you expect the taxpayer to fund your self-inflicted wheel chair bound life style?
5) Do you feel comfortable putting your family through additional suffering by seeing you scarred for life having flown through a windscreen unnecessarily?
6) The Police don't make the law, democratically elected Politicians do.
7) The seat belt laws were passed democratically and for the good of the general public and not just to annoy you.
8) Accept the law or get elected as an MP and fight to have the law changed. Shut up or put up!
9) I have scrapped someone off the road who had chosen not to wear a seat belt and was thrown through a windscreen. Clearly you have not or you would appreciate that my personal freedom not to have to deal with your mess is as important as your freedom of choice not to wear a seat belt.

We must go by the laws of our priviledge, not right, to drive a vehicle. Laws are there for a reason. The seat belt law is there to save your life. I know it has saved mine once when someone went flying through a stop sign and we hit him head on. My son has been in multiple accidents that weren't his fault and it has saved his life and limited injuries on many an occasion.
I also would hesitate to make a decision of the insurance companies and coverage or increased policy costs if you were to be an accident with no seatbelt or be cited for no seatbelt.

you should always wear your seatbelt because your body could actually kill someone else in the car by them getting crushed by it on impact. and whats the issue with a seatbelt anyway its not like its a huge deal, just put it on, you will probably be happy you did if you were ever in an accident

Yes. It's like a dress code for the open road. In WI you have to wear a seat belt but not a helmet on a motorcycle but on a bike you do. But not on a school bus. It's all about money and tracking people. I am a repeat offender of the seat belt law. Since 1988 16 tickets. What's the point? If I die I don't have to deal with crooked cops anymore.

Yep I agree entirely it is up to you as you cant be physically forced to wear it but it is an offence not to and therefore you should be punished for failing to adhere to the law.
It is in place for a reason that you may not see but when you have to close a road off for several hours risking further accidents and injuries to officers, fire service and ambulance attending plus the personal distress of having to knock on a mothers door and tell them that there son is dead but they cant see the body as it now resembles a jig saw with missing pieces then you will see why it is in place.

If you were in a collision and YOUR BODY is thrown about the car, although it is YOUR BODY, what about your passenger (family members?), who will inevitably suffer from the consequences of being struck by YOUR BODY. Likewise if YOUR BODY is thrown from the car what about the innocent pedestrian.
My wife and children were recently involved in a collision. Thankfully they were strapped in and suffered nothing more than whiplash.
Just how difficult is it to put your seat belt on. I've heard countless excuses "I DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO PUT IT ON!".
Just how long does it take to put a seatbelt on in your car.
I've also been to many a collision and seen the ghastly consequences of not wearing a seat belt. I've also had to give death warnings to loved ones. Neither are pleasant. I for one will be wearing mine. Think of others and wear yours. CLUNK CLICK ON EVERY TRIP!!!!!!!!!

I think that if you are over 18 it should be up to you, however seat belts do save lives. I've seen crashes where if the operator was wearing a seat belt he would have walked away with only minor injuries, instead of some serious ones. I now wear my seat belt a lot more.

Stupidity is a personal choice, and everyone has a right to that, but the insurance company along with the taxpayers should not have to pay for your mistakes. If the seat belt law as it is today is abolished then the sole fiscal responsibility should be your own. I believe the seat belt law, while saving lives, is a law that is unnecessary.

It's nice to know that police are paying so much attention to and "cracking down" on people not wearing seat belts. Especially since not wearing a seat belt has ever been the cause of an accident. Meanwhile, a drunk driver goes weaving down the road and causes an accident, killing and/or maiming innocent people, whether they had their belts on or not.
