Normally a tick will drop off after feeding...but not all ticks are healthy, and that is the problem. Ticks carry a lot more diseases than Lyme disease. You want to get that parasite off you asap and get medical attention just in case. Why take the risk of getting sick. For instance Lyme disease can lead to permanent disability.
Here is a partial list from the CDC:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/diseases/list_tickborne.htm
Babesiosis (Babesia infection)
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever
Ehrlichiosis
Lyme Disease
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Southern Tick-Associated Rash Illness (STARI)
Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever
Tick Typhus

As you can see, ticks are nothing benign nor are they something to ignore.

Lyme's disease is usually visible as the "bulls-eye" marcation around the point of attack that will show a week or two of infestation. Why would you leave a tick on yourself? Don't screw around with this - get your butt in to your Dr. and get on an antibiotic. Oh, probably the best way to do a tick removal is immediately with a good dose of alcohol on a swab. Don't take a chance on this one!

It get's really fat and falls off.

And of course there is a higher probability of contracting lyme disease, but pft.

You'll know if you have it if when the Tick comes off, a few days later the bite mark looks like a bullseye with a red dot, white ring, and a red ring.

But, nothing serious.

Depending on its mood, it will fall off, hang on for more blood or hang on and die. The longer it is in place the greater chance of infection and the greater the chance of transfer of problems like Lyme disease - and believe me you don't want Lyme.
