Who is G-d? Is that anything like God?

Is it just because people are afraid to say the word God?

After Jewish tradition, out of reverence, the name of G-d is never to be pronounced. It is generally referred to by the term "ha Shem", meaning "The Name", which is a reference to the sacred name by which He revealed Himself to Moses at the burning bush.
