Proper eating and exercise......
You have to eat correctly...notice I did not say 'diet'. Proper eating is a way of life...that is why diets fail. You should eat 5-6 small meals a day. Equal portions of carbs and protein and about 20-30% fat...yes 20-30%. Skip the no fat foods...cut out garbage food like potato chips, fried foods, soda, fast food, candy etc. Drink skim milk...2% milk is still loaded with fat (don't let the name mislead you). Drink plenty of water. Eats lots of white meats...chicken breast, turkey breast, fish. Buy protein bars for meal supplements...it's amazing how great they taste these days. Okay enough of the eating....I could go on for an hour here but this is enough to get you started...do some research if you want more info. Try 'Eating for Life' by Bill Philips for a good start.
Now the exercising....someone mentioned running for a hour every day....if you are new to exercise and try this you are guaranteed to quit in the first few days.
Start with about 20-30 minutes 3 or 4 days a week....whatever you like to do....jogging, bike riding, swimming are all great choices. This is actually about all the cardio you really need unless you are training for a competition. As your endurance improves pump up the effort....try to run the same distance in a quicker time for example.
Another thing to do is start lifting weights...If you put on some muscle mass you will burn more calories while doing cardio.
As far as ab exercises...DON'T do sit-ups...they are bad for your back. Crunches, leg raises, knee raises etc. Keep your arms across your chest when doing crunches...never behind your head...you can hurt your neck that way. Go to the store and a buy a magazine...almost every month at least one of them has a great ab routine.
Just remember you will need ALL of the above to get really nice abs.
You can do a million crunches a day...but if your fat then they won't mean a thing.
Good luck.
Oh, one more thing....allow yourself 1 FREE day a week...no exercise and eat whatever you want...that's right...anything....cake, pizza, beer, etc....if you try to cut out the bad foods entirely when you finally give up you will probably eat more junk then before.
Oh and about the nutrisystem someone mentioned above....$300 a month is ridiculous. Learn what I mentioned above and you will be fine.

fad diets are not gona help you - you will gain back more than lost as soon as you start eating normal again because all you lose on these day/week diets is water weight and muscle and also slow down metabolism dramatically.
you need to change your eating habits and exercise
find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

Do a three day diet and when your done starving yourself you ll put on over double the amount of weight if you had been eating the same as you are now.
The best way to keep healthy and loose weight is to only eat high energy food if your going to burn it ( like carbs) eat everything in moderation and 30 min of exercise a day.I have found if you stop eating say chocolate for example because your on a diet after you loose weight you pig out on chocolate etc. also dint go on a diet call it changing your life style and change it for life doing regular exercise and instead of eating a huge peace of cake every day eat a small peace 2 times a week . i lost heaps of weight and been on a shake diet and unless your on it for ever weight goes back on ,the side effects to starving your body is not worth it.

Losing weight is a simple equation: if you burn more calories than you eat, the weight will come off. Start off by estimating how many calories you burn each day using the calorie calculator http://straighthealth.com/pages/tools/caloriecalclb.html This will give you an idea of how many calories to eat. Healthy weight loss is 1-2 pounds per week. To lose 1 pound per week you need to create a calorie deficit (burn more than you eat) of 500 calories per day. To lose 2 pounds a week, you have to double the deficit to 1000 calories per day. You can achieve this by eating less, exercising more or a combination of both.

I am on Nutrisystem and have been since January of this year. I have lost over 60 pounds so far. It is a great plan for only about $10 a day. Also, cut out fried foods, junk foods, sugars, salt and especially carbs like white breads, only whole-grain wheat bread. Good luck to you!
