can you put 20's on a 1986 nissan maxima, and about how much would it cost, would it be cheaper to put 18's and then drop it, is that possible?

Regardless in order to lessen the gap between the fender and the tire you need to lower it with lowering springs. Also lowering it tucks the wheels under the fender so they don't stick out. Yes 18's would be cheaper. And normally they recommend only going up max of two sizes bigger, though with your maxima if they are 15's go up to 18's. For example if your factory wheels are 16's max would be 18's. Reason is if you go to 19's the ride would be rough and harder to manage the car. So if you go too big, your ride will not be as smooth and harder to manage your car. If you want to go to 20's go ahead, but I don't recommend it. Go to www.wheelsnext.com they have the best wheels and prices.

Take the $2,500 to $3,500 your about to spend and put that as a down payment on a new car. The 86 is really old and larger heavy wheel and tires will destroy the loose front end parts.
