I worked for a doggy groomer before. It depends on the breed and size of the dog and how it's getting groomed (bath, shave, trim. etc.) It also depends on what kind of condition the dog was in when it got to the groomer. If the dog was a tangled and matted mess, you would get charged more.

Cost depends on the breed and what you all want done with the dog. You can always shop around and compare prices and if you find one you prefer over another but there is a cost difference ask if they will match prices. Make sure the dog gets the proper care while in the groomer's shop-water in the kennel etc and ask what the groomer's approach is to a misbehaving dog. I have taken mine to a place that is quite popular and she was mistreated by the grooming staff. Sometimes the extra money is worth it if they treat your animal the way you do. You should always be welcomed to watch the process and if you are not take your dog and leave.

The cost really depends on many things:
Breed of Dog - Long hair breeds cost more than shorter hair breeds - and poodles with special cuts can be very expensive
Size of Dog - Small short hair dogs require less time than large short hair dogs
Aggression of Dog - Dogs with any behavior problems cost more
Condition of Dogs Hair/Fur - if there are excessive matts this takes extra time to detangle or cut out
Your Location - If your area has a higher cost of living the price can be more
Experience of the Groomer - groomers who have been working for years, who specialize in difficult breeds or who are willing to work with aggressive dogs can charge more for their expertise
Additional services - nail clipping, ear plucking, anal glands all could add to the cost (personally I would only have a vet do the anal glands)
In my area in Michigan I have seen prices start at $30 and go up from there to $50 or $60
Calling a few groomers in your area would help you know the going rate for your dog and location.

Cost depends on where you live, some areas are going to cost more because they have to pay more to run a business in that place.
And it depends on the breed and what shape the dog is in.
I retired (injured) from grooming 3 yrs ago. I groomed in CA.
I was experienced and had excellent references. Haircuts started at $45-$50 for small dogs in good shape. Baths started at $30. Both were full services, nails, ears and anal glands included. I also did not charge extra for most special shampoos or minor matting .
My regular clients were on 4-6 weeks schedules. I was usually booked 3 weeks in advance and up to 8 weeks in advance near the holidaze. My clients paid for excellent personal service. I knew my clients and their dogs very well and took very good care of them.
I did not take drop in clients usually and would try new clients but if they would not keep their dog in good shape and keep on a schedule I sent them elsewhere. I wanted my dogs to enjoy grooming.
Also no dog stepped foot in my shop without proof of shots...so I was able to groom dogs that had cancer or immune problems with less worry. Every crate and surface was disinfected between dogs with a Parvocide. My clients felt much safer because of this.
Aggressive dogs or matted dogs were more expensive of course. I dealt with some very nasty dogs, they didn't scare me and I often was able to retrain them. I would brush out a matted dog once, if it returned matted I shaved it.
People still call sometimes to see if I ever plan to groom again. I was not the best groomer on the planet, but I was very good with dogs and had high standards. Whatever I did, I did to the best of my ability.
Sometimes you get what you pay for....cheaper is not always better, and expensive is not always worth it .
I was never an Average dog grooomer ;)

I am a professional groomer this means I have been t school to learn how to groom teh different breeds. My prices start at $25 dollars but it depends on the size dog, the condition of the dog, and what exactly you want done. I have on dog that is kept outside and comes to me every 2 years with nothing at all be done inbetween and it cost them between $85 and $100 each time but others bring their dogs every 2-3 months and they brush the dog inbetween and it never runs more than $25.
It also depends on the area you live. I will say that a lot of nonproffessionals charge mere than i do .

It depends on the size of the dog.
and by grooming are you talking just a bath? or a cut too? nail clipping?
Nail clipping runs $5-10
a Bath including cut could be $20- 90 depending on the breed/size/cut
