Why not teach you children about all religions, and then let them be aware of what you follow and why, and then allow them to make a choice? Wouldn't this effectively open the gates of religious tolerance and understanding for all?

My parents did so for me, and did not object once when I dabbled in other religions. I actually do plan on doing the same for my children.

When a man is thirsty, he drinks water from the nearest spring, where the water is clearest and freshest. Why go to the far and remote ones? A child is in no position to 'choose' a religion any more than the language. Why do you think we teach our children their mother tongue FIRST and then other languages? Religion is part of our heritage. When we're more mature we may choose another religion, not that of our fathers. And that is also right. But it's a choice of an adult, not a child.

Most parent only assume that if a child follows what they are doing, they think it is accepted by their child as a way. There is no parent that would not be happy to find their children going in the same way they do when it comes to following a family tradition. I do not think however that all parents impose their belief on children, it is evidently showing when the child grows and start to search for their identity in the society doing many unfamiliar things within and outside the home at their age of adolescence.

I as a parent am very adamant and believe in Christianity. I believe as a parent that I should shelter my children from "misleading" information, or lies from a cult. True not all religions are bad or cults...but there's so much going on in the World that you must stay alert. There's people from cults that to a young impressionable mind they could possibly brain wash them without the facts or truth. I am instilling truth in my children so that when they become adults their spirits will have been fed a lot truth and they can make proper decisions concerning spirtuality. Knowledge is key and you can't be tricked if you're armed in Truth and Knowledge. To introduce many religions could also lead to confusion in a young child.

The Treasury department and most banks have a wonderful policy in place to familiarize their employees with counterfeit money! The never let the people they train HANDLE counterfeit money! They may only handle the real stuff! In this manner, the people become so familiar with the feel of the real thing that, when they are handed funny money, they are alerted to it, immediately!

In the same manner, Christian parents teach their children the truth of God through Jesus Christ, the truth of the Bible! Then, when they are older, if someone were to come to them with the fake stuff, they would know immediately that it was fake because they had been exposed to the Truth all that time!

There are a lot of religions in the world! It would be impossible to teach them all religions.

If you think about it, parents are in a certain faith usually because it's what they feel is right and they would want to bring up their child with the same ideas.

Kids, also, will have the freedom when they are older and more mature to explore other religions based on what they believe is right.

1. If you believe, truly believe in a certain way......it only stands to reason you will teach your children the right way to believe.
2. If you believe, truly believe in a certain way.....you are going to teach your children what is wrong with other faiths(backwards from what you suggest).
3. Any child, somewhere in their maturity process, will question what they've been taught (sometimes out of rebellion, sometimes out of natural curiosity) and discover for themselves where truth lies.
4. In the Christian faith, if a child comes to Christ as a child, their faith is proven over and over by the time they become adults and the Holy Spirit (indwelling) bears witness with them of the truth of Jesus.
5. The Bible tells us to train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart.
6. Man is born into the world with Adam's sinful nature. If left to itself, man self destructs and takes others with him if possible.(spiritually speaking)
7. What you suggest wouldn't open any gates of religious tolerance or understanding for all, because we would still end up taking a stand for what we believe and continually try to disprove the other religions ...... just like we do now
8. No parent is going to purposely teach what they believe to be a false or harmful doctrine to the precious child he loves.

Unfortunately, parents today are too wishy-washy about everything related to their children; and that includes religion. Look at the "I'm-okay-you're-okay" world we live in now. Our kids are searching and out-of-control because we aren't teaching them anything but to do whatever makes them feel good. We're raising self-centered, lack-of-integrity, prideful little brats that correct their own parents and defy authority at every turn. We need to teach our children standards, morals, and integrity . . . and that means religion. However, if the parent isn't convinced themselves their religion is the truth, then they really don't have one and they SHOULD be quiet about it and not hide behind "we want you to learn on your own." Believe me, every child grows up to make their own decisions about what they were taught, anyway. I'm so SICK of you apathetic parents! "Raise up your child in the way that they should go," not cross your fingers and hope you get lucky. It's a lazy parent who refuses to teach their child, not an enlightened one.

Because some parents (like my own) believe in the concept of hell, and don't want their children to go there. So they'll raise their children in whatever religion they feel will set them on the right path. My mother was truly terrified that I'd go to hell if I dabbled in other religions. Also, in my case, it was cultural (in my area, most, but not all, of the people of my nationality also share the same religion). It's fairly common for parents to raise their children in their own culture and beliefs. My parents died when I was young, and after that, I began to open up and explore other belief systems on my own.

I want my kids to have a knowledge of other religions, and I know that my children will decide what they believe and what they will live out for themselves. However, to me religion is about more than just teachings, religion is about a way of living. I don't dismiss other religions, I respect them, and I hope my children do too, but I hope that I have passed on to my children why Christian faith is important to me, and the way for me to live.

My kids know about many religions. They know it's their choice what they choose to follow. Different religions exist because different people will have different spiritual paths. My path may very well be different from the one my kids will end up on.
I know where you're coming from. Some parents of my kids' friends think I'm nuts to expose my kids to different ways of thinking.
To each their own.
