What do you think about Snape? Is he a Friend or a Foe? What do you think is going to happen in this FINAL book?

Snape is one of my favorite characters in this series. He comes second to Sirius. He is always mysterious even though he's bad to Harry and he killed Dumbledore (I have like this love and hate relationship, lol).

NOTE: In HBP in Ch.28 pg.603

When Snape says "Blocked again and again until you learn to keep your mouth shut and your mind closed, Potter!"

I think he is reminding Harry to keep on practicing Occlumency and the non-verbal spells.

I have another question.

I believe Snape was in love with Lilly Potter. Maybe thats why Snape is so utterly mean to Harry ( I know that James was horrible to Snape b/c James bullied him) but maybe he is so mad that James married Lilly.

Do you think that they had a relationship? Cause remember that theres a woman that once loved Snape?

I think that Snape is a fascinating character; no matter whether you like him or not, you've got to admit that he is interesting. He is this very complicated figure throughout the series; intelligent, talented, powerful and determined to have respect. Snape is an enigma - his actions defy clear cut categorization of either "good guy" or "bad guy". He is extremely biased, always favoring Slytherins, targeting Harry and Neville for insults and humiliation, but he also protected Harry and the Sorcerer's Stone from Quirrell. He is a known Death Eater, but he is also a member of the Order of the Phoenix. It seems that Voldemort and Dumbledore both trusted him, but one can only guess where his true loyalties lie. I can't wait to finally learn the answer we've been waiting for years to find out!

I think that Snape is a rogue character, without loyalty to either Voldemort or the Order, ultimately out for himself - a true Slytherin, shrewd, cunning, power-hungry, and willing to use any means to achieve his ends. He was a unhappy kid that was humiliated by bullies. I think he sought out the Dark Arts and later the Dark Lord as a way to defend himelf, punish those that hurt him and command respect through fear. After he became a Death Eater he discovered that Voldemort is a sociopath that will torture or kill anyone that disappoints him, including his followers. To avoid this, he made himself valuable by acting as a spy against his greatest enemy: Dumbledore. Knowing that he was the only one his master feared, he kept his options open by acting as a double agent. If Voldemort fell, he'd have Dumbledore's protection - who kept him out of Azkaban and gave him a respectable job at Hogwarts. If Voldemort retained his power, he'd provided him with valuable information and would've earned respect.

After learning the beginning of the prophesy, Snape knew that the one with the power to defeat Voldemort could help him escape his commitment. Regulus Black proved that no one can just quit being a Death Eater. Now that Voldemort is back, I think that Snape will help Harry to defeat him. It would explain why he has protected him in the past and why he gave him advice even as he was under attack. If Voldemort were to die, Snape would be free and could honestly claim that he'd helped bring about his downfall. If Voldemort kills Harry, he can claim that he was a loyal Death Eater all along, if there is any doubt he killed Dumbledore. Either way, Snape would be in a good position, as a hero or an anti-hero.

Snape may have been infatuated with Lily, but I doubt that they had a relationship. Lily was like Ginny is: beautiful, kind, vivacious, intelligent and with enough self-confidence to stand up for her beliefs. However, like Ginny, Lily would be an inappropriate choice for a Slytherin (at least in the view of fellow Slytherins) due to her Muggle-born status. Remember what Blaise said about Ginny? It didn't matter how beautiful she is, he wouldn't touch her because she is a "blood traitor". Maybe Snape felt conflicted about his feelings for Lily. She shared his natural gift at potions, which he probably admired, but she only felt sorry for him and he'd feel rejected, angry and resentful about that.

My best guesses:

Snape is Snape. He is beyond the sort of simplistic categorization as "good" or "evil", IMHO. I do believe he is not as evil as he appeared at the end of HBP. It would take too much space to really go into this in detail, but consider this:

It is well known that Snape played the double-agent prior to the death of Harry's parents, and there is no reason to believe he wasn't still a double agent on the anti-Voldemort side. Why then did he bind himself to the success of Draco's mission and then actually kill Dumbledore?
My answer: Dumbledore knew that destroying Slytherin's ring had fatally wounded him and Snape knew so too. Therefore he allowed himself to be bound to Dumbledore"s death, a death he knew was imminent and against which he knew Dumbeldore had taken precautions to ensure that his death would not derail the anti-Voldemort movement.

Now, on the other hand, if Snape has turned coats; why did he not kill Harry* or disable him and take him helpless to Voldemort? JKR made it clear that Harry is no match for Snape as a wizard (yet). If you look at Snapes "taunts" at Harry and put them into anyone else's mouth, they're very good advice on what Harry needs yet to learn to fight strong adult wizards on anything like equal terms.
My answer is that Dumbledore at some point shortly after Harry was orphaned made Snape take an unbreakable vow to protect Harry. This fits in perfectly with Snape's actions toward Harry in the books thus far. Yes, Snape is a mean SOB to Harry, but that is Snape's personality, and he didn't vow to be nice to Harry after all.

My conclusion is that in Book Seven, Snape will act covertly and eventually overtly to aid Harry, that he will likely live, and that Harry will be just as in the dark over Snape's motivations as when Harry entered Hogwarts. (BTW, the above is why I don't think Harry will die. If I'm right, then Snape dies too if Harry dies, and Snape is the ultimate survivor).

*My reading of the prophecy is that there is no requirement that either has to directly kill the other, just that one no longer lives, so I think Snape certainly could have killed Harry and talked his way out of it afterwards

Yea, Snape is also one of my favorite characters in the series. To be exact, he is my third favorite after Dumbledore and Sirius. I believe that Snape is on the good side and that he did what he did on Dumbledore's orders. In the final book I believe Snape will die or if not him then Draco Malfoy, not both. In my personal opinion I think Draco Malfoy is going to change to the good side before the ending of the book. Wormtail will end up saving Harry from Fenrir ( spelling) the werewolf guy because of the debt he owes to Harry ( (and the silver hand) (legend has it only a silver bullet can kill a werewolf)). Those are some of my opinion on what might happen in book 7.

I like Snape but I think that he is foe. I dont believe the Dumbledore would have made Snape kill him if Snape really didnt want to. Thats not how Dumbledore is.

friend =remember they both could read minds so dumbledore would know if snape were ever trying to concel anything from him. also dumbledore could have sent a message to snape to let him know that he had to kill him. i think that dumbledore made snape take the unbreakable oath to protect harry. remember at the end of the book when harry is running after snape and trying to curse him, he says no unforgivable curses for you potter.

Snape is definitely a foe in my honest opnion i mean he killed Dumbledore. If they wouldn't have came to see what Draco was doing i think that Dumbledore would still be alive in the Seventh book.

I think that Snape is kind of a double agent and that he might have helped Dumbledore fake his death.( I don't believe that D in dead.) I hope Harry kills Voldemort, but you never know what J.K. Rowling will do. Like I never thought that she would kill off Sirius! That made me mad. I don't know what to think of Snape. It is kind of funny how he hates Harry, but his job was to protect Harry. Ironic isn't it?=]
