All small dogs think they are big and mighty!

You want a small dog that was bred for hunting. One that is fearless, yet very intelligent and trainable. A dog that is very people oriented and makes a wonderful house pet. I've just described a dachshund. They were bred to hunt badgers on the badgers own turf, underground. Other than a fisher or wolverine, a badger is a fierce fighter pound for pound. Dachshunds have been described as, yappy, stubborn, and not good around children, phooey. That is a description of a dog that was not trained. Dachshunds are very intelligent and can train any ignorant pet owner. Any dog is always a better and safer pet once it is reliably obedience trained. One other thing. If you own a dachshund then you lose your lap and that is where the dog will always be when you are sittin.

If by "big" you mean calm, quiet, and friendly rather than "macho," many of the hyper, yippy breeds suggested here are exactly what you DON'T want.

Stay away from most toy breeds and small terriers. Instead, look at the breed groups that contain most of the big dogs, and consider the smaller breeds within that group. Some of the breeds you will find this way include:
Sporting: the smaller spaniels (Cavalier King Charles and Cocker)
Herding: Welsh Corgi, Shetland Sheep Dog, Australian Cattle Dog
Hounds: Whippet, Beagle, Basset (not exactly small, but low to the ground).

Remember that any dog will be calmer & easier to live with if you take care to train it well.

BTW, I'm with Bizzy on this one: I have a beagle, and she really is just like a miniature big dog.

All little dogs I've known think that they are big macho pooches, when all it would take is a flick and they'd be taken down! You could try a chihuahua, miniature dachshund (best!), pomeranian, or yorkie. Make sure that you educate yourself beforehand too. You should pick up a Dogs for Dummies book, I swear by it. Good luck! :)

well i have a beagel and i think that she acts way more like a big dog than my golden retreiver... they are difficult to potty train though.... oh and they are really smart which can be a bad and a good thing but i think that a beagle would be a really good choice. they are protective, strong, and just really really good dogs.

It would DEFINATELY be a Mini Schnauzer!!!
My mini stands right up to the big German Shepards and he barks in their faces and hops around them and tries his darn best to show them whos boss! He's pretty cute when he's like that!
But, the bigger dog just looks at him like hes crazy. But you gotta love him for tryin'!

I would recommend a Caren Terrier. They love to play, bark at birds, and have a lot of energy.
