then why are the streets of heaven paved with gold, and other precious jewels? To me, it's not humble or even portrays the humility that Christians are meant to have. It's materialistic, and it goes against everything the Bible stands for. Personally, I'd want to have lush grass, streams, trees, animals, etc. That seems a lot more peaceful and rewarding than some hard, stone road.
And don't tell me the love of god is all you need, etc. That's not what I've asked.

Mystine G - It's easier to poke a camel thru the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven. Didn't a man in the bible have to lose everything (and then god rewarded him again)? If you're humble, you're not going to flaunt, you're not going to wear rolexes, drive a hummer, and live in a $6k home. You're going to give your excess to charity, to those who need it, and not keep it for yourself, just what you need for you and yours to survive. That's being humble. Didn't Jesus get angry in the temple because of the money they were collecting? Apparently wealth for a Christian is a bad thing unless you use it appropriately....
And the guy that called me a hypocrite. No, I'm not. I've read the Bible, went to church for ages...
The Bible's too full of contradictions for my taste any way. I was just wondering :o)

The purpose of heaven is not for our enjoyment or reward. It's to bring glory to God!
It's not certain that God literally meant the streets were paved with gold (though you never know for sure....) It's possible it was just his way of showing us how glorious heaven will be in a way our minds would be able to comprehend.

Most People don't know what that word "Humble" means or how to obtain it.
Now, the Gold in Heaven is Good!
GOD is the GOD of More than Enough!
Up there, on PLANET HEAVEN with TREE's and GRASS and FLOWER's and all kinds of Good Stuff, Gold don't really mean up there what it means down here.
Earth is a spin-off of Planet Heaven.
What you find down here you mostly find up there too!
Hope this helps.
Ditto.........and Remember, Gold transmits Electricity Very Well!

i guess you really didn't read the bible.
what you describe is GOD's place for his apostles..ect.
did you not read about the lion laying down with the sheep?
did you not read about vipers that little toddlers play with and no harm or death?
GOD own the entire world..that is full of cattle, livestock.wild animals..as well the precious metal and stones within it.
does not a king were gold and stones?
do you not wear a watch or jewlery of some sort?'
do you not drive..vs walk?
do you not have more than one shoe or clothes?
your richer than the poor in africa..or anywhere.
you got paved roads ..the poor has dirt roads.
you got clean water
the poor got polluted creeks.
you got shelter..the poor.....
anyway.
your being a hypocrite and didn't know it.
american are the riches compared to the world.
all of this riches of GOD..attract the rich in the world too.
and don't we glorify them?
why should GOD..not be glorified with riches?

It has no meaning with regard to materialism. Materialism is something that exists on this earth because people covet. In heaven, no one will covet. God merely makes the new Jerusalem out of these things because they are beautiful. By the way, the bible says there will be a new heaven AND a new earth. If you are saved through Jesus Christ, you will "miss" out on nothing. The earth will also be restored to its pre-fall condition, i.e, perfect.

well money is not sin, the love of money is, there is nothing wrong with having nice things, would you want God to create a heaven that is second rate, believe me heaven will be perfect, and the Bible doesnt say that there wont be nature, in fact it says there will be streams and trees, keep reading your Bible. and searching for the truth. hope this helps...

It's not the only time that silver and gold are used as metaphors in the Bible though.
Proverbs 3:13-16
Blessed is the man who finds wisdom, the man who gains understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.

I think , in the heaven you will care less what are roads are paved with. This part of Bible , I think , is for poor folks to see that they will have everything they need in the Kingdom of their Father. Gold there would have price of dust here.

I suggest you look up the meaning of the word humble. A person can have money and expensive things and still be humble. The two things have nothing to do with each other.

I have always found it a humbling experience to see the vast wealth and extravagant lifestyles possessed by church leaders in the USA. VERY humble indeed.
