It symbolizes your devotion to God and to obey his commandments. It is a symbol nothing more. A statement if you will. Thus one will have washed his robes with the 'blood of Christ' and become clean in God's eyes.

What does baptism ritual accomplish. It is a contract between you and the church in which you agree to follow the church rules and support the word of the church. Right or Wrong. It has nothing to do with God, Jesus, Faith or anything else. If the church tells you to go downtown and take off all your clothes and run around the city for one hour and you refuse. You breached the contract. If the church tells you to sell your house and you refuse you breached the contract. The church can do no wrong by the contract.

Baptism is an a sign that you are willing to acknowledge your faith in public. With out accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior baptism does nothing. It was meant to indicate a new birth. A person dieing to their old sinful ways and trying to live a better life with the help of the Holy Spirit.

Water baptism is an introduction to the church because water represents truth and the church is where the truths of faith are.

It is the betrothal ceremony where you (as a member of his church) and Jesus become engaged to be married. This is just as binding as the actual marriage that takes place in Holy Communion. Scripture tells us that in marriage the two shall become one flesh so we at that point share in Jesus' righteousness and he shares in our iniquity. This is why he volunteers to suffer and die. After his death he rises again so that after our death we may rise again. Then justice is done because we deserve the death but, for those who love God and believe in Jesus he has mercy on us so he raises us.
