Although I strongly recommend BitDefender 9 Professional Plus which is the best I have ever tried (but it uses a lot of RAM and it does slow down the boot up) I would definitively recommend you the AVG Antivirus.
You won't even notice that it's working in the background.
Many of my friends are satisfied with AVG.

To be honest, you would be very lucky to find one.
I know of fast firewalls, but antiviruses, now that my friend seems to be an unsolvable problem and one that can be explained by analysing how antivirus software works.
Antivirus software has to have what is known as a signature database, which allows it to differentiate what files are virii and what are not. It has to keep this (rather large) database in your computers RAM at all times and it also has to look up every file you use in it's database. Depending on the software, it may even monitor components such as Windows.
All this is using your computers resources and almost makes it impossible to have an antivirus that does not negatively effect the performance of the host computer.

You will hit the same problem with most, I have tested almost all of them on various specs of machines, the best one I can think of for your current spec is Avast, they do one free for home use. www.avast.com, even so, you will still notice a bit of speed lost.
ps. Avoid Norton or Mcafee on your PC.
