Up until we had a driver's license, our allowance was our age in dollars per month. I don't know if inflation has changed that, but it was always enough.

Ours wasn't tied to chores. Chores weren't optional, they were a part of being a responsible member of the household. We could earn more for above and beyond chores (cleaning the garage for example).

Families handle spending differently. You can let them have total freedom and when its gone its gone. Another option is 3 jars marked "spending" "savings" and "charity" and have them divide the money up and help teach them civic responsibility that way.

Regardless of what you decide, it is important to teach your children about money. We are putting less and less money into savings as a society and going more and more into debt. Helping children learn about money from a young age will help them deal better in the "real world" someday.

Not sure I have the right answers, but I just started the allowance a couple months ago - mine is age 7. She has 5 chores she didn't do before (like sort laundry, fold the towels herself, etc), for $5 a week. She gets $1 for every chore she does without complaining, but I give no allowance if her room is not clean by Sunday night. The deal is that her room is her responsibility, and there's no excuse not to do it, and no reason to reward for doing it.

20% must be put into her savings, before she spends anything, then we talk about what she wants to do with the rest. Sometimes she saves it all, if she's saving for something specific.
Hope that gives you some ideas.

My parents gave us $2 a week. LMAO! I'm not telling you to give that to her now, that was several years ago. Depends on what she does, really. I'd say $8-10 a week would be good enough if she does a lot around the house and does her school work well, if she slips up on her school work or chores she should be doing, deduct a few dollars or something.

i was paid bi-weekly,mine were given a dollar per year in age bi-weekly...i withheld their allowance if chores were not done or if too much complaining, comparing, tatteling about who was or was not doing what chore....chores were explained as jobs everyone in the family was responsible to do. i still had final say over the spending, like they couldn't buy 10.00 worth of candy and eat it all at once...

3 $ for the youngest, 5$ for the 7 yr old, and 10$ for the 12 yr old. give them thier spending money on the friday of each week, IF their chores are done and they have had good behavior all week.

Why does a 3 year old need money. And chores should not be paid for by you. They are lessons taught by you for life skills. I say abolish the allowance for chors. system. Money should only be given for things needed and age appropriately.

We do not give alowance here. "Chores" are done by everyone in the family and are seen as a part of life. You do not get paid for living life. If they don't want to do the dishes there are no dishes to eat dinner off of and we all wait. If they don't want to clean their room up there is no room for guests to come over and safely play. If they do not want to clean the bathroom up then they do not get to use it, or they have to use it dirty and I use my own clean bathroom. You get the point.

Now a 3 year old doesn't need an allowance. Make it $5.00 a day and if they don't do any chores one day then take off that day's wages.
