There is a good chance you can inherit the tendency, so keep your weight down; get plenty of exercise; keep your cholesterol low; don't smoke; avoid caffeine and anything that causes you stress; and have your blood pressure checked on a regular basis. And if a doctor prescribes medication for you be sure you take it.

Heredity is one factor. The way you were raised (with maybe stress, some unhealthy eating habits, and avoidance of exercise) is another factor.
You should be aware of those potential problems and seek a healthy life style to do the best you can with the cards you were dealt in life. Lots of people who are hypertensive make a successful effort to keep their BP within limits despite that so you and your dad should both keep those issues in mind.
