I am asking because yesterday there was a power cut where I lived and the electricity was off for 5 hours and I was sitting at him thinking "shoot" no tv, no lighting, no computer, no heating.. So I went out for a drive until it was all resolved...

Then the same thing happened today due to the adverse weather conditions. I had lighting and power, but no heating or hot water for about ten hours... the company could not resolve the problem which affected most of the area in which I live and so there is a generator sitting outside the properties providing electricity now as they cannot find the fault.

I just hate feeling so reliant upon needing gas and electricity because when it goes you are kind of stuck... It's strange as when I was on holiday in Uganda in February, I spent most of my time there in darkness as electricity supply was sporadic... maybe I should get solar power.. !!

Anyone else get cheesed of with this over reliance??

I live in an area that gets regular short power cuts and it really ticks me off. Trouble is, we have become totally dependant on all of this. If it was suddenly taken away could we really cope? I think not.I am lucky at the moment we have an open fire, so heating would be o.k and we live in the countryside, so wood not a problem. However, things like keeping food fresh, washing clothes etc, could i cope, no. Have a bad back and can not see myself hand washing everything! Thank goodness for the automatic washer!!! I fully agree though, we do rely on all this power, whether it is electric, gas or oil. We are heading for a downfall, of our own making. We must be accountable. We must "wake" up and look at what we are doing.I already recycle, switch off lights when i leave a room. Try not to use the car too much. Try and buy energy saving products etc.Is this enough? No. If everyone did it, maybe. Do they? No. Anyone who is reading this please do your bit and we will all benefit.Just change a few things and it will help, but only if we all do it. We must pull together. It is not just one persons problem, it concerns all. You may find it slightly inconvenient to start off with but then u get used to it fairly quickly and it gives u a "kick" knowing that u are doing something to help, however small.Don't giv up. This world is worth fighting for. If we want to keep our "conveniences" going we must be sensible about using them. Please help all of us as well as yourself.

No not really. Its your choice. You don't have to have TV, Radio, Computer, DVD, Stereo, etc. The way things are going at the moment most poor or low income families will have to make some very tough choices about what they have in the home. They just wont be able to afford to run them.

What about the old and retired people now? Heat or Eat?
Thats how we look after people in this country. We are all about the GRAND GESTURE. Lets lead the world in climate change, but sod the little people.

Imagine living without power for a day... it would be tough but you would survive.

How about a week? Again you would survive, but it would be real tough going.

A month? No chance, anarchy would be in full swing. People would be looting and mugging others for what little food was available!

If we ever lost power then (the developed world) would fall. However third world countries would survive! Talk about a change in the balance of power - best go and stock up on batterys just incase...

The smokeless zone legislation has a lot to answer for! Trouble is most of us couldn't light a fire anyway because we haven't got chimneys!
Yes, it is worrying how dedpendent we are but it's the same across the board. A few snow showers and the country grinds to a halt, but Scandinavia doesn't seem to have a problem with snow.

YES! And how can we stop it? The big power/gas companies have us in the palm of their hand. Even worse: though it is winter, the worst thing of the power outages is the fact that (in a country crippled by crime) nothing that's supposed to help us, works: floodlights, alarm systems, everything. Even our mobile phones will only work so long, until they have no more battery power...

I wonder if all this technology will be mans downfall.
When i drive to work i can't help thinking why don't we just turn all the traffic lights off.
Do we need them.NO
This modern technological world we live in is stressfull.
I agree with you I hate it.
Every house should be covered in solar panels.
What gets me is the goverment i believe talks a lot about green issues but dosen't give us the information to change.
