My boyfriend has his computer on alot. And even when hes at work people in his house use it. Its basically on 12 hours a day sometimes.

Does this do any harm to the computer. Its just hes only just got rid of a broken computer and this is a new one, we don't want it to go the same way the last one did. He needs his computer for work.

I never turn my computer off, as I have done with almost every computer I've owned, and it has never (I repeat, NEVER) caused any problems. Nothing bad will happen to it, but if you want to help it last longer and still have the benefit of having it ready to go all the time, go into the Power settings in the Control Panel and set it to go into standby mode after 5 or 10 minutes of being idle. This way, it will be technically "off" (the whole thing will power down and just wait until someone presses a key or moves the mouse), but you won't have to boot it up every time to use it.

I had my old pc for nearly 5 years and it was on for about 15hrs a day every day and it still worked fine the only reason why I got a new one is because I wanted one with much better specs. A pc that is kept on for long perods usually lasts longer than a pc that is always being turned off and on. Just make sure that it is well cooled and you have a good antivirus. Also if he has improtant data on there make sure he backs it up onto a usb flash drive or a blank cd just incase the pc dies

having the computer on doesn't harm it, it's turning it off and on that harms it, having the computer on prevents chip creep, and turning it off and on causes a surge of electricty to go through the computer, now that's not healthy for it.

I'm not saying you should have it on 24/7, but if you think about it, servers are on 24/7 and they are very reliable.

Leaving it on lke that will shorten it's life, but probably not before it becomes obsolete. Of more concern is letting others use it. Viruses, spyware.. 2 things that can slow down or kill a computer. Not everyone is diligent in what things they click on on web pages.

Its ok as long as its build quality is good, I leave my computers on 24/7 for months on.

Its actually better for the PC if its left on for longer, if you turn it off and on constantly then it will heat up and cool down alot and this will cause it to crash more often and just generally add wear and tear.

more problems are caused on startup than by leaving the computer on.. as long as he doesn't leave it online so hackers can get into it.
