Well, I use Word on a Mac, but I think it's probably the same for Windows. Do a search for the word (Edit -> Find) and then check "Highlight all items found in Document." That will tell you how many times the word you're searching for appears in the whole document.

But that's on a Mac. If it's different for Windows users, then sorry, I don't know.

Here's one way...

Open the document. Make sure your cursor is at the very beginning of the document.

Click on "Edit" at the top of the screen and then click on "Replace". A window will appear.... In the "Find What" box type in the word you want the info on.

Let's say the word is Pets. Type Pets in the box. Then click on the Replace tab at the top of this little window. Type in a change for the word you are researching. Foe example change Pets to PetsX. Then click on Replace All.

Word will search the document and tell you the number of replacements it did. This will be the number of times the word in question appears in the document.

Now that you know what you wanted, change the document back. Do the same process as above, only this time search for PetsX and replace it with Pets.

Hope this helps.

The only way I know would be to manually count the words. If you use the Find/Replace feature... in the Find What box, put in the word you want to find. In the Replace With box, make up a new word that you want to change it to. Then click on the button to Replace All. It will say something along the lines of "word was replaced x amount of times". Close out of the document then--don't save the changes.
