That started because there was no way to store dead bodies on the ships. However now they can store bodies in special compartments of the ship so they can be returned back to the families. Or get them flown out.

You can request a burial by sea instead of having your body flown or sailed back to land to be buried or cremated.

you can start by contacting your local American Legion or VFW post, or a Veteran's Affairs coordinator.

My uncle was buried at sea just a couple of years ago. His body was cremated, and then some of his ashes scattered off of a US Naval Vessel underway.
