Pros:
its a good looking car
that model started production in 1998, so most of the kinks are worked out (when buying a new/used car, its a rule to stay away from buying a car when it was first new to the market or redesigned in a two-three year period. these cars will always have more problems and kinks. and will always end up costing you more to repair then later models... ive been a car enthusiast for 10 years, and have never heard of a car where this wasnt true)
Cons:
Its has typical volkswagen quality and reliability
its very expensive to maintain, and you should be expecting to pay at least $1000 everytime it needs to go into the shop.
it has typical volkswagen quality and reliability (this cant be stressed enough)
you would be paying nearly half of what a new one costs.. and you wouldnt have a warranty.. you can expect that engine to die at 125,000 miles..
The passat is one of vws better cars. its not made in latin america, but instead is made in germany... vws latin cars are junk... if someone tells you they are built with high quality, they really have no idea what quality is...
you want to stay away from the gas engine passat.. the diesel is so much better, and you dont have to fill it with premium.

Ok that is way to much for a high mileage 5 year old Passat. That said a 17 going on 18 year old Honda yoour slipping back to when cars did not have air bags and modern safety equiptment. German cars are hard to purchase parts for unless your friend works at the dealer. Ones I see come in as used cars seem to have lots of broken switches and bulbs burnt out. Also almost all the trade in also have one or two check engine light codes too. 12,000 is almost new Nissan Versa, Toyota Yarus or Honda Fit price range. And new car dependability and warranty.
