God can force us to do what He wants, He just doesn't like to. He'd rather us do it on our own. God wanted Nineveh to hear about Him, and so He sent Jonah, but Jonah knew they'd repent and didn't want that, so he ran away, and God caused a storm, so the crew threw him overboard and he was swallowed by a fish. Now, Jonah could've been stubborn and simply not spoken when he arrived, but I imagine God would've found some other way to get Jonah to do what he needed to.

This "fable", as you will see if you look closely at Nineveh's history, is not a myth at all. There really is a mound called Nebi Yunis (Prophet Jonah), where Jonah himself preached repentance to the Ninevites.. What the book of Jonah not-so-convieniently leaves out is the destruction of Nineveh after they backslide into their old ways of violence and bloodshed, even after God chides with Jonah for Jonah's compassionless heart. ( It turns out that Jonah was right, after all!)
Jonah's question with God lies at the heart of the story, (as it did with Moses) which is in essence: "Why bother me about it? You're God , aren't you? So let me be, and do this yourself! Do you really feel the need to embarrass me in front of all these people? I know you are capable of anything, and I already know about you. Why prove yourself to me, again? I AM ALREADY CONVINCED! Pick on someone else, PLEASE! ( but maybe Jonah snuck off and smoked some hashish, or something, and aroused God's anger against himself...Hmm....) after all, it was the region of Lebanon, and Turkey...

Yes, He cannot make us do something.
Jonah could have hopped out of the whale and run away if he wanted. God just put him there as a bit of a lesson, made him think about what he was doing instead of just whining and running away.

God gave Johah a job to do, his lack of faith caused him to run.He did a good job when he got back to where he was supposed to be in the first place.
The boss tells you to do something that the boss knows is ok but you don't know the out come and you chose to run away instead of trusting the boss's judgement
