My fiance and I plan on getting married by the end of August. I am trying to find out if I can legally file as a single individual (one last time), on my federal taxes, since I have been single for most of the year.

If you haven't filed your 2006 return yet, you must file that as single. However, if you get married at any time in 2007 and are still married on 12/31/2007 your only options for 2007 will be Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately.

Your marital status on 12/31 determines your filing status for the entire year. Even if you get married on New Years Eve, you'll be considered married for the entire year.

If you get married during 2007 and are still married as of the end of the year, then no, you can't file as single for 2007. Your options will be to file a joint return, or married filing separately. The joint return will almost always save you money.

If you are legally married as of Dec 31, 2007, you are married for tax purposes for the 2007 tax year. There is an exception if you are separated for the last six months on the year (July - Dec). That can't apply if you are married in Aug.

No. If you are married on the last day of the year, you have two choices:
Married filing Joint
Married filing Separate.

Your filing status choices are determined by whether or not your married on the last day of the year.

Legally you can only file married filing joint or married filing serperate. You have to wait to January to get married if you want to file single one last time.
