Several of my uncles and cousins used to stutter. They all got the book "Self Therapy for the Stutterer" from The Stuttering Foundation and after working diligently through the steps over and over were able to overcome the stuttering with the exception of times of extreme stress. One also went to a speech therapist at the same time he was working through the book.

My young adult son stutters.
He started getting speech therapy in elementary school, and graduated TWICE.
He tried to get therapy in High School, 'cause believe it or not, even in HS kids can be cruel. When he had his appointment with the speech therapist at high school age, he didn't stutter bad enough to even be assessed.
Some people think he is lazy and that's why he can't stop stuttering permanently. Some people tell him "slow down" "think" etc. etc.
I wish for his sake he could stop stuttering because it is actually a physical strain on him. I believe he just can't talk as fast as he thinks...he doesn't hear himself stutter, so he doesn't even know he is doing it until someone says something.
My advice to you is to read up about it, and see if you can get a feel for why people stutter. Therapists are all different; if you don't like one you don't have to stay with them. When my son was in elementary school, one therapist tried to blame his stuttering on abuse. Well, maybe for some it is because of abuse, but when it isn't, and you stutter, try telling the therapist anything different. As far as stopping, if you ever do, please let me know how you did it.
Someone else's mom.

If this is a long-term, chronic issue, you probably should see a licensed speech therapist. Stuttering can be a different issue with different people. For example, some people only stutter over the phone; others stutter in all communication exchanges.

A person's abnormal condition, like stuttering, can be due to inadequate physical development or psychological. A speech expert can diagnose which one. If it is physical, then science has a solution for it. Stuttering is not a new disease or condition. It has been with the modern man for as long as he lives. If it is psychological, a psychiatrist can conduct test, like hypnotism, or evaluate the person's past and present situation and environment that is causing this nervous manifestation. When the cause is determined, the solution can be made. And the person can manage his behaviour to consciously check himself from stuttering. The message is consult the proper specialist for this condition.

I have the same problem. Sometimes people make fun of us. I just say it is Gods way of making us unique. For the stuttering, try talking slowely. Or you could read a book out loud and if you mess up, try the scentence again. Hang in there, buddy! :)
Sincerely, .

Hmm. If you look on the Web you'll find some good sites with recommendations. Are you still in school? Maybe you could get speech therapy through the school. Wish you luck.
