find calorie/fitness calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have lean meat (protein) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min, light weight training
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, past etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

If it's just a few pounds, you dont' really have to go on a special diet or anything like that.

What really helps is to eat smaller portions and cut out the sugars. With sugar, keep in mind all the foods that have sugar/honey in them, that also includes corn syrup as an ingredient. read labels and familiarize yourself with what's in a product. It's quite scary, actually.
Sweetened cereals and soft drinks should definitely go. What's great is to eat oatmeal in the morning, but not the prepared stuff but make it yourself, with some fruit and nuts on top. That'll keep you going for a long time and you won't have any food cravings. Drink lots of water. The important thing is to get your metabolism on track and then you shouldn't have any trouble to keep your new and ideal weight.
Do some type of exercise. Or just walk whenever you can. Take the stairs often and park your car a bit further away, to get the extra exercise.

Good luck!
