Yes you can. You have to keep an eye on it though. WHATEVER YOU ARE BAKING HAS TO BE COVERED, so you will need a lid in order for it to rise and bake evenly. Be sure not to have the coal (if you use coal) directly under the cake pan or it will burn the bottom of the cake and the middle will not be done. If you're using a gas grill then that is different. We used lava rocks (from our local Home Depot) to keep the grill hot and then turned the grill down as if we were using a conventional oven. It is really cool what you can do on the (OUTSIDE) grill.

According to the Food Channel it is possible to bake a cake on the grill. Go to www.foodchannel.com, look up grilling and cakes. They have some recipes.
I know my son made a cobbler on the grill, but he used a charcoal grill, and didn't use the grate, he piled the coals around a dutch oven. It turned out very good, he even won a prize for his recipe.
Anyway, try the food channel. Good luck!! Let us know if you find a good recipe and how it turned out.

I think it will bake if you put the batter in a well greased and floured heavy pan. Put on a low heated grill and cover with a lid to hold the heat in. If you're using charcoal make sure the coals are white before sitting it on the grill.

Yes but it is an experiment.
you have to control the temperature.
Remember they cooked in cast iron pot and pans over the campfire.
They still do in the BBQ cook off's and jamborees for historical events Even the Boy Scouts.
Have you ever thought of a toaster oven...??
It is still an experiment.
cooking is an adventure of imagination have fun.
Have you thought to build a mud oven outside ..basic and simple...?
