Have some gloves handy
and grab them above the upper fin
and put your index finger and thumb behind the fins that will cut you.

I have done this alot but never grab them by their mouth because they can bite you hard even with cloves.

Good luck!

The catfish has very sharp barbs on the front fins. They will cause pain when they stick you. Grab the catfish below the front fins and use a pair of long nose pliers to remove the hook. Have fun, just be careful.

Wear heavy canvas glove, and use needle nose pliers to get the hook out. Just grab it by the lower lip and use the pliers to yank the hook out. but if the hook is so far back in the mouth that you start putting your hand in it's mouth just cut the line. the stinger is the whiskers. or at least that is what stung me. when i tried bare handedly

if its one you can pick up easily then pick it up with your fingers under the gills and your palm on the belly. be sure to wet your hands first because you don't want to take the slime layer off them, it protects them from infection. For big catfish bring them up on shore or grab their lower jaw. And yes you can get a nasty sting from their front fins.

Grab them by the lip with pliers & use needle noses to remove the hook or just break your line & tie on another hook.

I just use my hands but this tactic will work for beginners.
