I think it depends upon how "traditional" you both are. Traditionally the guy asks the girl, but since the girl is asking the guy maybe she wants to buy the ring.

As a guy I would want to buy my wife a ring, but that's me.

Seeing that women wear engagement rings and not men, it makes sense that the woman make some sort of contribution to it. However, tradition dictates that the man buy the ring. If he isn't interested in marrying her, he is under no obligation whatsoever.

I suppose you would get your guy a ring. I'd never ask a guy because I'd like an engagement ring myself! Not that I'm materialistic, at all, but I like the symbolism of the guy asking, and then him giving a ring as a symbol of the promise.

usually when a proposal happens, the answer has already been determined and the proposal is a formality. In the spirit of getting used to being married and sharing resources, it really shouldn't matter who buys the ring - since in the end it's the property of BOTH of you.

If she asks, she buys. If he asks, he buys.

I had inherited my ring from my grandmother, so I already had it, but even though he asked me, I put that one on and then I bought him one as well because he wanted one. I suppose you guys can discuss how you want pay for it, but what I said above is traditional.

generally it is the girl who wears an engagement ring so even if she asks him then conventionally he ought to buy the ring (though she still has to buy him a wedding ring eventually).
