Kittens can easily sleep up to 20 hours a day. Cats up to 16 or more.

A lot. Possibly more than 12 hours per day, but not all at once.My cat sleeps 6-8 hours during the night, then takes a 2 hour nap in the morning, another nap in the afternoon, and I strongly suspect he always sleeps when I am not at home and he is bored.
If however the cat is lethargic (sleeps more than usual, doesn't play, etc.) this could indicate some problem.

Alot! Cats and kittens are lazy animals. I have three cats and they love to lounge around all day, don't know how many total hours their out never really paid attention, plus I'm not sure on how active they are at night. Though they love to push my bedroom door open and nag the crap out of me while I sleep.

Heck while I'm typing this Patch is probably in a box curled up, Nook is more then likely on the kitch counter, an Onyx is on the tv stand all snoozing now lol.

There's no doubt about it: cats sure know how to sleep. Although the amount of time spent napping varies from cat to cat, and depends on the cat's age and personality, felines spend an average of 13 to 16 hours each day curled up in slumber.

Nobody is sure why cats sleep so much. Cats evolved from a long line of hunters and predators – and their sleep patterns reflect that. For one thing, they are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk), since most of their prey is active at these times. This gives them plenty of time to sleep during the middle of the day.

The cat's diet may play an important role in its sleep patterns. Large grazing herbivores must graze for hours to supply their bodies with enough food. But the protein-rich diet of the cat does not require such an investment of time, and allows him plenty of time for napping.

I have read that they do sleep 16-20 hours a day, and that they can sleep more or less depending on the breed and the environment. Of course they will sleep when you are a wake and want you to play when you need to sleep. They are just like human children! LOL LORI O^O

They tend to need more and more sleep as they get older. 16 hours isnt considered excessive But sleeping all the time can be linked to boredom depression or your cat being unfit so if they seem to sleep ALL the time. Try encouraging them to play or give them a little more lovin.
