Hey, I have a 2004 Dodge Ram.. well about a month ago I was rear ended pretty hard, just tailgate damages, but still driveable. I did not get it serviced yet or repaired. The other day I was driving and my truck went dead. I took it to the shop and they said there was no oil, and they want receipts. The advisor said the cam was welded to the cam shaft.

Now.. for that to happen, would it be caused by no oil or could it have been caused by being rear ended pretty hard?

I would lean towards the accident having something to do with it due to being rear ended pretty bad will cause things to crack and break. Was there any oil or other fluids leaking after the accident? If so your problem lies in its your fault and you will have to replace the engine due to you driving the vehicle after it was damaged.

If there isn't any signs of fluid leaks, then I would guess that maybe your oil pump went bad, or you just had the oil changed prior to driving it on the day that the engine siezed and someone forgot to put oil back in. I've seen Ford Dealers do that a few times.

Check your oil often!!! Or suffer the consequences, anything is possible but it doesn't sound like something a wreck would cause. Now if it put you in the hospital and destroyed the truck maybe something from the crash caused the problem, but unless you can get a mechanic to sign his name to an affidavit you are SOL pal, sorry. P.S. My full size truck was hit in front of my house by a drunk driver and it destroyed the car that hit my truck, the impact moved my truck 10 feet into a phone pole up on the side walk, it broke my clutch plate springs, I had to replace the clutch plate to drive it and there was minimal damage to my truck, it cracked the tail light, and bent the side just far enough to make my tailgate not open and shut, I had to open it with a sledge hammer, but other than that it was fine, the insurance company totaled it because it was old, I bought it back from the insurance company for $75 dollars off the settlement offer.

i seriously doubt it had anything to do with the wreck. yes, no oil can/would make the camshaft do that. normally, i would think that you would munch the bearings on the crank, or connecting rod(s), and/or fry the rings. anyway, the oil is there to protect the engine from heat, as well as lubricate the engine. so, anywhere the oil goes, could get damaged by too little oil, or no oil at all.

my guess is that, you were burning oil, you had a leak (rear main seal?), or didn't have enough oil in it when it was last serviced?

although it's too late, you might want to determine what happened (so it won't happen again). was the oil filter loose, was the oil cap on? did you ever see it smoking (out of the exhaust, or under the vehicle)? did the oil pump go out (as mentioned?), i'd not lean that way, as it's not that old of a vehicle, but it could be possible. was the oil pressure light on (or did you have a gauge)? anyway, g/l

if the motor was ran out of oil that is your fault. if the pump went bad wich i doubt and you failed to stop driving immediately any engine damage is your fault. if the accident caused the first failure you decided to keep driving not the other guys fault.

if the accident was not your fault (was the other person cited) you can sue the insurance company of the other person
