Firstly, if your cats have fleas, forget supermarket sprays and go and get Frontline from a vet. Expensive but effective for 2-3 months with one application.

Toys are a waste of money, you will get better out of a ball of wool or a load of baking foil rolled into a ball - trust me, I have mice, fish and balls all over the place which are untouched, yet the foil from a roast rolled up gives them hours of endless fun.

Most of the food sold in supermarkets is fine, it will just be a case of finding which they like best.

You sound like a typical , cat lover, no matter where you are from!
I'm from the UK, and also a 'typical'!!
A cat is just like a kid all sorts of fancy toys etc and they end up playing with the boxes they come in.
I have bought that 'catnip' spray and sprayed her toys with it, great fun at the time she had a little fit for a few days and really enjoyed it, then got fed up, no effect at all now, she ignores it, and her toys.
I did notice whenever I put my shoes on she wanted the laces, one evening I brought home pair a of long boot laces, and tempted her with these, that's it now, her favourite I can do whatever with her other stuff but I am not allowed anywhere near these laces !! Just try that.

When you get your new cat or kitten, take them to the vet for a health check. The vet will provide the medication to treat the cat for fleas and worms and though these products cost more money, they are much better than the ones you can buy in pet shops or supermarkets. Pet food is sold in vets, pets shops and supermarkets. Your local Yellow Pages telephone directory will help you locate ones in your area. I agree with the person above, that cats often prefer playing with everyday items around the home (like the plastic ring off a milk bottle or ball of scrunched up paper, an old shoe lace) just as much as the ones you can buy.

The Blue Cross is a large animal charity in the UK with rehoming centres and vet clinics in London. They offer lots of advice on caring for your cat and have free leaflets on their web site that you can download that will help you learn about how to look after a cat, their health care, training them and how to build a good relationship with your pet.

There are other animal welfare organisations in London who will help with the cost of spaying or neutering the cat, such as the Celia Hammond Trust and the Cat Protection League. If you search their websites you will find the addresses of their London branches.

Good luck.

What spray do you mean exactly? If you mean flea treatment, get this from a vets, do NOT use the cheap, dangerous rubbish they sell in pet shops.

PetsatHome are your best bet for all these things (except their flea treatments obviously, don't use them), they have the widest ranges and are the most reputable. Here's the website so you can have a look at their stuff, and prices, an find your nearest store:

Wilkinsons have a good selection of cheap but good thing for cats and its not easy to know what toys will appeal this is a plus. my 9 month old tom's favourite toy is one of those rope dog pull toys. he gets hours of pleasure either playing tug of war with one of the ferrets, the 2 year old tom and even my Inuit husky or just shaking it about!
