There are two versions of the 4.0 v-6 that year.. most gave the OHV version.. Their is a DOHC version that uses two timing chains and basically requires removal of the engine to service.

But I haven't seen a chain in either one ever break or even stretch.... They are built really good...

If your car died all of a sudden it could be numerous things but for me it would be to look at fuel concerns (like the fuel shutoff being tripped or running out of gas) to ignition to a fuse popping and shutting you down.

Only a inspection by a mechanic will tell for sure what happened.. as the car's engine computer should give you an idea

There are 2 different 4.0 lit available in the 99 Explorer. The 4.0lit standard, with a conventional single camshaft in the center of the block, or the single overhead cam (SOHC)4.0 lit. Both have timing chains and there is a difference in the cost of repair. First off, if you have the SOHC engine, and if timing chains have failed, it would be caused by the chain tensioners. Expensive to replace, aprox $2,000. Not to mention the you need to have a certified Technician to perform this repair. In my opinion, I dont believe this is the cause you didnt mention if you have any noise. You need to diagnosis the dieing concern. Here is what you can do.
Make sure you didnt just run it out of gas. Test for fuel presure. if no, check to see if the fuel pump interia switch is not tripped. If presure is ok, self test the vehicles computer. At this point you would need to have your vehicle diagnosis by a certified technician to find your root cause.

Their prices are about right if you have a 4.0 OHV but if you have a 4.0 OHC you have 2 chains. The drivers side head chain is in the front and the passenger side chain is in the back of the engine. Why do you think it is the chain?

I heard the crank trigger is weak, check that first. the ohc is expensive to fix, but the chains don't usually break.
