My cats have gotten pissed at hubby and I when we come home with cat/dog smells on us. We went to adopted a new cat and while in the shelter held several cats, we came home that night and our oldest cat wouldn't come near us and he would hiss at us and growl. As soon as we changed, he was fine, he just didn't like the smell of the otherc ats. This is also the same cat that will practically go nuts over my sandles. He will lay on them, try and eat them, rub all over them and roll on them, some smells they really like and some they hate. Maybe your mother has a funny smell that the cat doesn't like.

Your Mom probably smells really interesting! Maybe she uses a scent [ tell her to try changing deodorant or perfume scents to see if that makes a difference.] or has a natural scent he really likes. Does it bother her?
I wouldn't worry about it. I doubt if being neutered will help - this is not a sexual or aggressive thing.
Lots of cats and dogs love the way I smell - stranger's dogs will come and sit on my feet, and some cats will let me hold them and no one else - but I have never had one 'huff' at me!

My cats do this when they find a really interesting scent. My three boys are all neutered so that has nothing to do with it. Sometimes they even roll on something they have found interesting scent wise. My one old boy Kory, used to love my brother, Dave, so much he would claim Dave's hat to sit on. Dave would throw his cap on the floor for Kory to love. Kory would smell it and pant, before rolling on it and then he sat on it as his own.

Cats have this organ in their mouth under their tongue its called Jacob's organ it helps them smell. My cats used it at christmas time when they would smell the tree they would open their mouth to get a better smell and huff a little. It might be that.

Funny! My cat does that, and I am not sure why either. My gut tells me he that he does it when he isn't sure how he feels about someone or something. If your Mom isn't a cat hater, ask her to show some love to the little huffer. Ask her to make friends with him by holding out her hand....petting him....giving him a treat, etc.
Be Well,

I'd say it's a scent issue...either a cologne or perfume or shampoo or laundry detergent she's using. My cat did that too...turned out the cologne my wife bought me was too stong for the kitty...she was disagreeing with it lol
