Local real estate companies can also provide you information. Be prepared to pay for that information. Most appraisal districts use information from the MLS to compute their appraisals. Using a real estate company will give you access to that same information. One of the biggest issues is being sure the tax appraiser has accurate information on your home.( ie sq ft, etc.) One year our taxes were raised substantially. When I met with the local tax appraiser, he indicated he thought our home had been remodeled as a building permit had been taken out. As it turned out, the building permit was for minor repair which required electrical wiring changes. After we resolved that, he lowered our value.

There should be a record of the tax assessments for your entire city, or area. The more local your comparison, the better. Home sales are listed in the announcements in your local newspaper as well, but these give the selling price, not necessarily the appraisal price for tax purposes.

Any Real Estate agent can get you that information. They do it every day. If you can find specific properties that are comparable, the date and price of the last sale are public records. Where I live I can search such records on the County Auditor's website using the street address.

Tax assessments are public record. Check with you local assessor's office as to how to view the records.
