the way I do it is:
disconnect battery
remove front splash shield
unbolt 3 bolts on idler arm (usally 17 or 19 mm bolts)and lower out of the way
unplug oil switch (no need to remove switch or filter)
un bolt 2 14mm starter bolts (come in through back of trans)
slide starter out with wiring attached out through front with idler out of the way
swap batt feed 12mm nut and 1 plug connecteor
reassemble

Nissan G is correct the 4x4 really will test the best nissan tech especally if there are oil leaks. Do not cheep out on the starter buy a Nissan Remanufactured starter. It is not fun going back in in a couple of weeks to re replace brand-X the two wheel drives are much simpler and front axle doesnot get in the way. Those cursed transmission cooler metal hoses...Good job for a mechanic with a lift.

Is it 2 wheel drive or 4x4?
Because on a two wheel drive you have to remove the following to get the starter out:
Remove FR R.H wheel.
Remove FR R.H splash guard.
Remove exhaust manifold heat insulater.
Remove exhaust manifold.
Remove oil filter.
Remove oil pressure switch connector.
On a 4x4 you have to remove the folowing to get the starter out:
Remove FR R.H splash guard.
Remove oil pressure switch connector.
Remove oil filter.
Remove exhaust manifold heat insulater.
Remove fuel tube retainer bolt.
