If you needed realistic protection you would not purchase a 6 week old puppy and hope and pray that he turns out the way you want him at 2 years of age. There are no guarantees with any puppy. A young adult of 1824 months would be able to show you his potential right now. If the puppy has the correct temperament and drives when he matures, you can have him evaluated for that, then he will need to get trained for the work you want him to do. No dog protects "naturally" and the few exceptions to this rule, ou would not want to live with. Most dogs have a problem engaging a human and need to be trained on how to respond to a threat appropriately. Have the dog trained by a qualified pro when the time comes. Good luck to you.

A knowledgeable owner/trainer knows not to buy ANY puppy under 8 weeks old. Good luck training bite inhibition.
And a good owner, would buy from well bred stable lines....a good breeder won't sell a puppy under 8 weeks.
Just any old Rottie or GSD or Dobe is not perfect for attack/bite training. The only dogs that should have actual bite training have super stable temperaments or are owned by Police or Military.
Training an attack dog leaves you open to being sued if you don't keep the public safe at all times. An ill trained or non-stable attack dog is a loaded gun without the safety on !!!
That is why trained adult guard dogs are so expensive. They have to raise them and put many hours of training into them to make them good working dogs.
In today's society I'd say start OBEDIENCE training the puppy ASAP, check for puppy classes. Raise a socialized, well adjusted dog. Fearful dogs are lousy guard dogs. Then find a trainer or club to help you teach alarm barking and holding. That way the dog can threaten and warn without actually biting a person and you getting sued. Few people actually need a dog that bites !
My friend's 2 Rotts were Schutzhund trained. She lived in a horrid neighborhood. They would pin trespassers to the back fence and nudge their privates to try to get them to run, so they could knock them down. They would grab an arm, but would release as soon as the perp stopped moving. But this took years of training !!! They would hold the idiots till the cops arrived.
Bite training is not normally something taught to young dogs. Trainers have to teach solid obedience foundations first or you'll have a dog that bites and won't listen or let go if you tell it to, if it bites the wrong person or kid !!
Dogs that are attack trained love it, but can get so excited it's almost impossible to get them off !!! Even the handler can get bitten by accident, and they almost always get bit sometime during training.
A large barking Rottie is enough, you don't need attack training as well, esp. if you have kids.

Like the other guy said, the dog will learn to trust you and protect you, but there are special trainers that can help you train your dog to do that. Maybe you should do a google search for local trainers in your area.

When someone comes to visit you, put your dog in another room. Do this every time because if your dog never sees anyone else besides you and your family it will instinctively protect you. And it depends on your dogs personality also. Not every dog will defend it's pack leader. I have 4 dogs, 2 pits, great dane and a lab/golden mix and only 2 of these dogs will protect me. Good Luck

I have never trained my dogs to attack, but if you keep him in the house and he bonds strongly to your family, he will protect you. My dogs go at anyone who comes to the door that they don't know... but if I tell them it's ok then they will let up. Just play and cuddle with the puppy while he's still young, that's your best option. Good Luck!

it's only 6wks old and you already useing words like attack....
a big fan of guns you say................
don't you think that the thief that breaks into your home will more then likely have a gun...........see stupid again.......
and if you are the trainer you say you are......why the question?................s t u p i d again
you should stay home and let the puppy go to work

I've had Rotties for 20 years. They are naturally protective so you don't have to train them. It is more important to socialize your dog so it grows up happy and loves people. You are more likely to be sued if your dog hurts someone. I wouldn't mess with your family if you had a big, black 100 lb. dog barking at the door! :)

A dog that is loyal to his owner and is shown respect from his owner will protect his owner's home out of instinct. There is no need to train him to do so.

Hey...Michael Vick...You don't need to train your dog to attack anyone or anything. A dogs natural instinct is protect their pack from unknow intruders. This is a natural process and people like you do not need to enhance a vicious process...aka...Michael Vick...

No need for training or making the dog mean by clipping the ears or tail. The dog will automatically protect your house. Please do not abuse the dog to make him/ her mean. That is so evil. No dog deserves that! Also please do not refer to animals as an "it" it sounds very low class.
