Watching the Price is Right and the thought came up...

I took a tour of NBC studios last summer and one of the other people on the tour asked that question. Apparently in the past they just left the prize and you got some form of compensation instead. Now you recieve a voucher for your prize so you can pick it up from a store or location closer to home.

There is always a buyout option for all of the prizes, in the form of cash or gift certificate. It is of extremely lower value than retail of the prize they won.

Well, if that is the case, but often the prizes aren't huge, the show will probably pay. Or they will ship it themselves in the first place.
