My birthday is today and I'm now 19. I'm bummed because I'm getting farther and farther away from my childhood. And I have very little direction in my life. I'm not in school until fall, hopefully. I have two jobs that don't even qualify for part-time, and I'm in the army which I'm no good at. I'm not ready to grow up because I don't know what the hell I'm doing. It doesn't help that I suffer from depression, which I'm currently on meds for. Nothing is planned for today, which is a bit unusual. Our porch is being painted today, so that's the big thing for today. I don't want to call my therapist because I see her tomorrow and I'd like to be able to make it from one session to the next without running to her with a crisis. All my friends have either moved away or are at school so if I want to go out I'll have to go by myself. But I don't need to add that to my depressive mood right now. I guess it's just a regular day for me.

Happy Birthday. Let me just say that after suffering many depressions myself, i will tell you that what may help is positive 'self-talk'. When you start to feel yourself feeling it coming, tell yourself that you will not allow yourself to get like that and that it is not productive or good for you. I make myself get up and do something - just about anything. I usually ignored my housework so I would say I am going to do one thing and be okay with that. Or I would try to get out even if it was for a walk or go to a park and watch people for a little while.

Do something you want today - is it a walk, take a nap, get an ice cream, buy a cd or dvd? Just some small indulgence for yourself.

Feel better, my friend, if I knew you I would have baked you a cake.

You are lucky to have friends and probably family that love you, I have neither and so have to handle it all alone.

Well, firstly-Happy Birthday. I'm sorry that your day is kinda uneventful, just make up for it later on.

I know how you feel, and I think that it's pretty normal to feel like that. I know that when I was a little younger I had the exact same reaction to my birthday. It felt like everyone had taken some class in 'becoming an adult' that I completely missed. To this day, I sometimes wonder, 'how do they know how to do this, and I don't??'

I think that you should, in the short term, take yourself out. Go do something you like-even if it's going to read and get a cup of coffee. As for the long-term, stay with your doc (kudos to you for that) and maybe start taking some college classes. Just find out what you have a passion for, then learn all you can about that.

Good luck.

I'm glad you are in therapy but making a change for the better in your life is ultimately up to you! Happiness is not a result of wonderful things happening but a decision you make! So.....you have a porch at your home. Some people don't have a home. You want to "go out" so apparently you're not broke. Some people don't have food for the day. You're apparently healthy enough to be active. Millions are lying in nursing homes, hospices, or grass huts, unable to get up to go anywhere. Turning nineteen would be a great time to assess what you HAVE and what you can DO with it.! Make some plans; set your priorities; the cup is full if you want to drink from it. Don't waste a minute of the wonderful gift of life! It's not going to come to you so you'd better go to it! You've got one chance to live to the fullest; whether you do or not is your choice.

You're in the Army, planning on school in the fall and you have 2 jobs? I'm not getting something here.

Birthdays are the alternative to death. I think I would go with the birthday and enjoy life.

firstly Happy Birthday.
secondly chill out. i know loads of people who hate their birthdays, me included. seriously you get bummed out becuase you expect it to be special or different just becuase its your birthday. it never is. its just another day. at least nothing worse than usual has happened. you could always celebrate it some other day. you dont even have to celebrate it. its entirely optional.
