You are one that can tell if you need a post mortem.
Was the death suspicious or did it die naturally?
Were there any suspicious circumstances?
Did any one leave the scene of the death?
How long you should keep it is how long will it take you to dig a hole?
Best of luck and sorry to hear of your loss.

You call it a racing pigeon. This indicates it was not just a pet. A necropsy can be expensive and unless you think it had a disease that might infect your other birds I would not bother.
How long? Bury or burn it ASAP. The longer it is held even frozen decreases the acuracy of the exam.

Tie little funnels onto their beaks so as that once it rains it's going to run down their throats! No, seriousl i don't think of there is any thank you to do it. in the event that they're fairly thirsty they might desire to stop to take a drink...

Soak it ceremoniously in brandy overnight, set fire to it, then catapult it in the direction it favoured most.

omg lol. however, i am quite sad that it died. If you stick it in the freezer, it can last quite a bit, maybe a week.
